I first read John of the Woods at the age of 9...or 10...perhaps 11? But I read it many times thereafter, until the book was destroyed by fire in the place where it was stored. When I went looking for it on Amazon a few days ago I could not find it by its title. I had to make a broader search through my browser's search engine and there it was...on Amazon! And for free! I should add here that it is beautifully edited. I noticed all of TWO errors. There may have been some I missed, but whoever Kindled this book loved what s/he was doing. Reading it again after so many years and as an adult, I can see what I loved about it as a child, even though the writing might have been called antiquated even then, for my first time was somewhere around 1950. The book moves along at a good pace, and yes, previous reviewer, it was written for children, and yes, it has a message. I think of our modern children who are presented with werewolves, vampires, the undead, and things even more unspeakable...how much better they would do with John of the Woods and others like it, rather than the horrors shoved at them in books and movies on portable devices.

John, first known as Gigi, was a tumbler, owned by three other tumblers, cruel men, who made their living by performing in the market places and who entertained themselves by beating Gigi if he failed to collect enough money following the performance. Then he falls from the top of their pyramid, and is able to collect almost no money at all from the disappointed crowd. Knowing he will be beaten almost to death once his masters are alone with him, he chooses to run.

How he eludes his captors, ends deep in a forest where he finds an old hermit among a menagerie of animals whom he also learns to love, and eventually ends up in the court of a king where he finds his own destiny...that is the rest of this book. It kept me captivated as a child, and although the vocabulary is not dumbed down, your kids will do what I did--I skipped over whatever words I didn't understand and kept avidly reading. It is a wonderful left-behind book from the time of my grandparents, and if it is a bit, well, unrealistic I suppose you might say these days, never mind. It's fiction, after all and well worth the read.

John of the Woods TREDITION CLASSICS Abbie Farwell Brown 9783842474482 Books Reviews

I am reading this aloud to my 8-year-old son and he begs for another chapter each time we sit down together. The author is able to paint pictures so he can see the scenes in his mind - a magical world in the woods...with an understory of the good vs. evil in man. It was written in 1909 yet is fresh today - we love this book.
not a hard read by any means but a good story none the less! I have read it a couple of times, just when i need something lighter to relax my brain with.
Real basic story. Not horrible, but not great either. Probably good story for young people. Really young people.
